It's a common myth. You'll get better at knowing how your instrument responds and where pitches sit. But pick up a new piece and try to hear it in your mind. Can you, or do you need to picture your instrument to follow along? If you can't audiate away from your instrument, you're missing a core musicianship skill. Yes, but not in every unit, and that's deliberate.
Unit 1 uses written pitch dictation heavily. You'll notate on staff paper, and answer sheets are provided. Unit 2 then swaps notation for number-singing, and Units 3 through 11 train the same underlying skill by ear and voice: holding a line in memory, hearing intervals in context, singing what you hear.
Written dictation returns in Unit 12 and the counterpoint units, where you notate individual voices out of a two-voice texture. That's the skill transcription actually requires.
If you came specifically for dictation practice, know that the course builds toward it rather than drilling it constantly. The memory and hearing come first; the pen comes after.
