Unit 6
You have the fourth, the fifth, the octave and both thirds. Unit 6 adds nothing. It makes them permanent.
Every chord gets pulled apart the same way. Listen for the bottom interval. Then the top. Then name the quality and the inversion. Major, minor or diminished. Root, first or second. Early on I play each interval back for you after you've guessed. Later you get a second or two, then the answer.
Inversions are the hard part, and Lesson 12 is a talk about why. Most methods hand you a shortcut: find the bass note, count intervals, memorize hand shapes. Shortcuts break at speed. Here you learn each inversion as its own sound. Root position sits. First inversion floats. Second inversion hangs there, waiting to move.
Quartal harmony arrives too. Chords built in fourths, side by side with the triads you know, so you can hear the difference in color.
The arc
Lessons 1 through 11 each take one key. Every one opens by letting the tonic settle, then runs triad quality, inversions, fourths and fifths, and the block patterns. The tempo climbs as you go.
Lesson 12 is the technique session. No drills, just the talk on inversions. Lesson 13 drills every inversion of the major triad in C, F and G until each sound is yours.
Lessons 14 and 15 review Units 1 through 6, the second half leaning on quartal and quintal harmony.
The final exam is silent. Forty examples, and I say only the number. Intervals and chords mixed together, any inversion. Write your answers, then check them against the answer sheet. 100 percent to pass.
Before you buy
It won't add an interval. The major sixth is Unit 7. This unit exists so that Unit 7 onward has something solid to stand on.
It won't tell you how many times to take it. The final is 100 percent, and if it takes more than three tries, do the unit again. Beyond that the call is yours. I'm not in the room with you.
It won't hand you the bass-note trick. That method works on paper and fails in real music. Expect to guess for a while. The guess, then the answer, is how the sound gets in.
Audio only, like Unit 5. Nothing to look at. Close your eyes.
