Complete Online Music Composition Program
Go deep inside your music through the use of profound compositional techniques that help you hear music in an entirely new way.
Dive into the most important subjects in music composition, including counterpoint, theory, form, orchestration, and coherence.
Connect with audiences by presenting your music composition and enjoy greater fulfillment. Present your music to the world.
The Composing Hour Masterclass Series will change the way you think about composing. The series will teach you a process instead of bombarding you with theories and arcane techniques. Most composers know that the cornerstones of the practice include counterpoint, theory, orchestration, and composition, but they do not know the right way to learn these subjects.
The Composing Hour Masterclass Series doesn’t teach a compositional method; it shows you how to hear your music internally so you can compose more effectively.
Let’s talk about your musical aspirations. This call is all about exploring your goals and discovering the next steps in your career—without any high-pressure sales tactics or surprise fees.
I know many are wary of jumping on a call only to face aggressive, high-ticket offers. Rest assured, our conversation is simply an honest discussion about how I can help you achieve your musical dreams, not about pushing a $3000+ package. All of my rates are clearly listed and there are no surprises.

Have you studied with composers who insist on injecting their ideas into your composition? Or worse, composers who teach using a rules-based, overly theoretical approach that doesn’t apply to the music you want to create?
Instructors should serve as guides and not dictate every aspect of your work. This results in demotivation and composers second-guessing their abilities. I have taught students who have experienced this kind of instruction first-hand and seen how it creates self-doubt.
I help composers see the patterns in their music, and I help composers learn to work with their ideas to bring out the full potential of each new work.
It’s said that genius begins at the eighth measure for good reason. In classical-style music, that is traditionally where the first phrase of a musical work ends.
How much time have you spent on those initial eight measures of your musical work?
What holds you back from creating your music?
Are you afraid of composing music that composers won’t want to play?
Do you worry if you are good enough to be a composer?
Are you a composer who is waiting to take one more class or understand a little more theory before you put yourself out there?
These are all common questions, and it's important to understand that you're not the first one to ask these questions.
I am to teach composers the following skills:
Fluency: You have started the path to improving your musical memory, and you can work with your musical ideas fluidly and with ease.
Development: The Problem of the 8th Measure is a thing of the past; you are filled with possibilities instead of limitations.
Confidence: Your confidence improves as a composer as you realize you are only limited by your thinking.
Freedom: Most importantly, you are composing more often and no longer sitting quietly chained to a piano or notation program.
I get it; you are a composer. As composers, we pour our energies into creating a new musical world, and we want our audiences to enter that world and experience our point of view. We want the audience to feel as passionately about our music as we do.
We also want to share our gift and be rewarded for it, and sometimes, we hold our compositions back out of fear.
The idea of finishing a piece may seem daunting. Perhaps you feel that your music is never quite good enough to present and you want to hold on to it until you are ready to reveal your masterpiece to the world. Or maybe you get stuck in the eighth measure and don’t know how to move forward.
I have been teaching composers for decades and I realize that each student needs a unique approach. If you know how to notate your music on a staff system, I can help you.

The Composing Hour Masterclass Series teaches you a process instead of bombarding you with theories and arcane techniques.
The Composing Hour Masterclass Series goes through three stages.
Build a Foundation: Open up your inner ear to compose more intuitively and deeply.
The Core: Learn compositional cornerstones in a process of renewal and avoid dead knowledge.
Perform: Put your music out into the world through an exclusive concert on UreMusic.com and YouTube.
The courses and private lessons teaches you a manner of learning that makes it possible for you to take your current knowledge and create music that doesn't rely on any external system.
You will learn along the way, but knowledge is not the most important result; the course teaches you how to think about your music and feel confident in the choices you make as a composer.
I have a Master’s in Music Composition from The University of Arizona. I have taught undergraduate and graduate music theory and composition courses at The University of Nevada Las Vegas. My wife and I run The Composer's Studio together to make it easier for composers to accomplish their goals.
I teach music theory as an aid to help musicians create more effective music. I started writing music when I was a child, and I created program after program to try and learn how to compose more effectively. I wanted to write music that moved people, and like many people, I thought the assimilation of dead knowledge was the cure. It's not.

We all know the old adage, “If it weren’t for the last minute, nothing would get done.” But, when it comes to composing, you need to start today. Each day that passes is a lost day to continue honing your craft and creating music.
Mahler could not finish his last and most promising symphony, where he began experimenting with the concept of atonality. Fragments of chant from Bach’s St. Mark Passion remain unfinished. Mozart’s Requiem also remains unfinished. Countless composers have the same story, and we must make use of the gift of time that we are given.
Every day you put off your training is a day that you cannot compose the music inside you. The best composers improved throughout their careers, but their musical essence often remained the same.
There is a simple reason a composer's essence doesn't change: When you know how to reach the wellspring within you and have the technique to communicate your ideas, all that remains is the time required to create your work.
The Composing Hour Masterclass Series is a highly condensed, compact form of training that would take you years to complete in private lessons or a university program with mixed results. You’ll walk away with more than dead knowledge; you will activate a deep source of inspiration you can learn to trust.
Ask yourself how much you would spend to learn to hear music internally, counterpoint, theory, orchestration, and composition in a single unified curriculum. I encourage you to do the calculations, talk it over with family and friends, and ask yourself and others what you have the potential to gain from your investment.
Most importantly, the lessons are on par with the industry average for composition lessons. You can check out the current pricing by viewing the course page today!
I have taught university courses in musicianship, ear training, and theory for years, allowing me to work with students in group and private settings. I have learned what works, and I have learned what doesn’t work. The nature of the university prevented me from taking too bold an approach to teaching these skills, so you will get raw and unfiltered training in the manner that I believe works from my own experiences.
However, the program does count on you to put in the effort. Ask yourself if you will put in the time and face challenges head-on. Will you trust the techniques to develop your inner ear, musicianship, and compositional ability? While there are never guarantees, I know that the techniques in this course will help you compose better music. But you have to be willing to dive in and hold nothing back.
Any style of music and all levels are accepted, but students must have a basic ability to notate their musical ideas. Kevin Ure does not provide instruction for electronic music unless a notated score accompanies the music. He believes that to properly edit a musical work and develop as a composer, the ability to notate ideas is essential.
Lesson Length
The series offers 45-minute private lessons lessons 4 times per month.
Students also get course access and 4 group sessions per month.
Kevin Ure launched UreMusic.com in 1996 and has been teaching lessons online since 2003. He has extensive experience working as a Visiting Assistant Professor, and he taught courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
